From the review anyway, the bio's approach seems a bit--out of step with current criticism, which has actually gotten pretty interesting again, after a decade or so of repudiation from micro-minded "Eliot should never, ever be read again because he's a right-wing (anti-Semite, sexist, supporter of fascism, repressed homosexual, culture snob, etc)". Not that those critiques aren't true, and trying to defend him against the anti-Semite thing, as the review mentions, is particularly weird because that's pretty self-evident.
What's interesting about current criticism, to my mind, is that it takes the less savory aspects of Eliot's life and work as ways to complicate reading of him, rather than mere reasons to ignore him or points to refute. -
